Progesterone Testing
The purpose of canine progesterone testing is to ensure timing is correct when attempting to mate the female. Progesterone testing is very sensitive and is very accurate and because of this progesterone testing is very popular in determining the optimal period for mating.
The Progesterone test requires a blood sample from the female which is drawn from the vet and then brought to us. Blood sampling for progesterone measurements should start at approximately day 7 after the onset of vulvar swelling and bleeding. the female should be retested every 2-3 days until ovulation has occurs. Ovulation in canines can happen anywhere between day 7 and day 27 of the oestrous cycle-which demonstrates the advantage of blood testing. progesterone levels will gradually rise daily and ovulation occurs when progesterone level reaches 15-20 Nanomoles per liter(nmol/l).
