Sassy and Arnies'
Red/Apricot Standard Poodle Puppies
08/06/2012
1 Day old
After 12 hours Sassy gave birth to 12 healthy red/apricot standard poodle puppies. Karen and I were with Sassy throughout her labour which was broadcast live via the internet. At 3 1/2 this was Sassys' first litter and what an incredible mother she turned out to be. Sassy proved to be a devoted, caring and loving mother to her 12 babies. She fed all of the babies herself without any intervention from myself. All I did was rotate the puppies to make sure all had their fair share.
Puppies are whelped in a spare bedroom to have the peace and quiet both Mum and puppies need during these critical few weeks. The bedroom is kept warm and comfortable. At 3 weeks puppies are brought downstairs to the "family room" where puppies use an interactive playpen to oneside and a toilet area the otherside. Access to these areas are through an open door conecting the 2 areas. The puppies, under supervision, play with the older dogs, watch a 43" plasma tv, socialise with my children and grandchild and learn crucitial milestones.

Puppies are thriving. Sassy ate like a king! Smoked salmon with scrambled eggs for breakfast with some cheese mixed in. Sassy ate better than us! Mum does not like to leave the whelping box, she wants to stay and feed and protect her puppies, so with gentle encouragement and a lead she comes downstairs and to the garden to relieve herself.

Already at 2 weeks of age the puppies are bright and active! To take the pictures we have place each individual puppy into a little basket, but as we can see puppies are trying their hardest to climb out.
At 2 weeks of age the puppies were wormed with panacur.

At just 4 weeks of age I was asked to stack the puppies as one of the male puppies was going to go into the show ring. Here you see Argentcymry Apollo. This fine young man now lives in Scotland with Morag.
Again at 4 weeks I have wormed with panacur.
Puppies are eating mushed dog food. Weaning was easy. This litter was advanced for their age I believe.

This is one of my favourite photos of the puppies. This is Ted. Ted lives Samantha and her family. Full of life and energy, the puppies are now enjoying the great outdoors (under supervision)...they explore everything! and try to chew everything.

Here are Sassys' girls at 6 weeks of age. What a beautiful photo. The puppies love to play outside. They start to use their senses and you need your wits about you...especially when there are 12 red/apricots. Their personalities are features are developing quickly. The puppies are quite demanding when it comes to meal times. They will let you know in no uncertain terms if you are late even by 30 mins with their meal!

Here are all 12 littermates. The girls are on the top and the boys on the bottom. To get this picture Karen and I have placed the puppies into plant troughs...it worked well. As you can see all the puppies are beautiful and healthy! It is the last picture of all the puppies together as at 8 weeks they start to leave for their forever homes....
